Beauty and the Beast by Zalman Raffael

World Premiere

A tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast invites audiences into a world where appearances can be deceiving and love reveals what is true. Rooted in the classic French fairy tale by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and later adapted by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, this story has endured for centuries because of its timeless message. Compassion, courage, and an open heart have the power to transform.

At the center of the story is Belle, a young woman whose kindness and independence set her apart, and her devoted father, whose love for his daughter sets the story in motion. When he becomes lost and is taken prisoner in the Beast’s enchanted castle, Belle makes a selfless choice to take his place. Inside the castle, she discovers a world suspended in time, shaped by a powerful spell and a past filled with regret. The Beast, once a prince, must learn to love and be loved in return before the final petal of an enchanted rose falls.

This ballet brings the story to life through movement, music, and design, creating a vivid contrast between the warmth of Belle’s humanity and the mystery of the Beast’s domain. Enchanted elements fill the stage, from graceful birds whose dancing adds lightness and wonder, to fairies who guide the story’s magic and transformation. Sweeping ensemble scenes and intimate pas de deux reveal the emotional depth of the characters, from moments of fear and uncertainty to tenderness and joy.

As Belle and the Beast begin to understand one another, the ballet unfolds as a journey of transformation. This change is not only seen in the Beast’s outward form, but also in the hearts within the story. In a world often focused on appearances, Beauty and the Beast offers a reminder that true beauty lies beneath the surface.

This program features an original score by Dr. David Goldstein, performed live.
