Assistant Technical Director

Type: Full-Time Exempt
Location: Raleigh, NC
Salary: $40,000.00 – $45,000.00 per year

The Assistant Technical Director is a full-time, benefits-eligible position reporting to the Technical Director. This position works closely with the Technical Director, Production Manager, and other members of the production team, as well as the Artistic Director, choreographers, and ballet masters, to support the technical requirements of company rehearsals, performances, and special events.

The Assistant Technical Director serves in a hands-on role supporting the technical and operational needs of the production department. Responsibilities include scenic construction, repairs, load-ins, performances, load-outs, warehouse organization, facilities support, stage crew supervision, and assisting with production planning and scheduling as needed.

The Assistant Technical Director plays a key role in maintaining safe, efficient, and professional production operations while helping ensure the successful execution of all company productions and events.

This position requires the ability to safely lift and move scenery and other objects weighing up to 35 pounds.

Key Responsibilities

Performances and Events

· The Assistant Technical Director supports the Technical Director and Production Manager in planning and executing all performances and events, including but not limited to:

· Assisting in identifying interdepartmental production needs for rehearsals, performances, and special events.

· Collaborating with the Technical Director, Production Manager, Lighting Designer, Scenic Designer, and Stage Manager to develop and revise lineset schedules, crew calls, and running sheets.

· Assisting with trucking schedules, load plans, and related crew assignments.

· Creating and maintaining truck pack inventories.

· Ensuring supplies, rentals, and equipment required for load-ins, rehearsals, and performances are acquired and prepared.

· Working with Props, Carpentry, and other departments to inspect, repair, and maintain production elements.

· Attending production meetings and assisting with follow-up action items.

Performance responsibilities include:

· Serving as a crew lead during load-ins and load-outs in both supervisory and hands-on capacities.

· Participating on run crew during technical rehearsals and performances, including moving scenery and props.

· Supporting the Technical Director, Production Manager, and Stage Manager in maintaining a safe working environment.

· Assisting in the creation and maintenance of production documentation for future remounts.

· Assuming responsibility for backstage technical operations when delegated by the Technical Director or Production Manager.

Show Construction

· Assist the Technical Director in developing construction drawings and material lists from scenic designs.

· Assist in pricing, sourcing, and acquiring materials and labor.

· Participate in scenic construction projects, including carpentry and basic steel work.

· Support other departments, including props, electrics, paint, and wardrobe, as needed.

· Assist in maintaining production quality and adherence to production schedules.

Warehouse and Equipment Management

· Maintain and develop road cases and storage solutions for scenery, props, and equipment.

· Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces in safe operating condition.

· Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.

· Maintain sprung flooring and marley surfaces to ensure cleanliness and safety.

· Track and document equipment inventories, locations, and conditions.

· Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering commonly used production materials and supplies.

Qualifications & Requirements

· Strong carpentry skills required.

· Welding experience strongly preferred.

· Strong organizational and project management skills.

· Ability to safely lift and move objects weighing up to 35 pounds.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.

· Experience with CAD or drafting software strongly preferred.

· Previous experience supervising crews or leading technical projects preferred.

· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills.

· Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.

· Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced performing arts environment.

PRODUCTION MANAGER (THEATER)

Salary: $50,000.00 – $60,000.00 per year

Reports To: Artistic Director

Carolina Ballet seeks a Production Manager to fill a position as the head of the Production Team. The Production Manager will work with all Technical and Design staff to ensure the elements of each production are completed safely, on-time and on-budget. The Production Manager facilitates internal meetings regarding design and concept of new ballet builds and re-builds of existing ballets. In addition, this role leads the show load-in, show run, and load-out at venues.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of theatre operations and implementing existing work as well as creating new work. They will have good time management, budgetary, and organizational skills as well as the ability to meet firm deadlines. Successful candidates will have good communication skills and have thorough knowledge of the technical aspects of theater production.

Key Responsibilities

· Research all technical aspects of upcoming shows and compile or produce information such as: Lineset Schedules, Rail Running Sheets, Deck Running Sheets, Truck Load Lists, and Crew Schedules.

· Create budgets for production-related expenses. Approve and track all production-related expenses.

· Report to the Artistic Director/CEO regarding all aspects of performances and events involving the company tracking production expenses and reporting potential for overages.

· Supervise production of scenic elements to ensure deadlines are met.

· Assist Technical Director with build planning and implementation.

· Maintain and acquire all major equipment used in scenic construction including researching and acquiring all necessary projection equipment.

· Ensure a safe working environment.

· Work with venue and outside contractors to arrange all labor and materials needed for show implementation and running for all technical departments.

· Engineer and plan all special effects.

· Directly lead load-in/out of all production elements including soft goods, rigged elements, hard scenery, lighting, sound, and projections.

· Install A/V equipment at venues.

· Other duties as assigned by the Artistic Director/CEO.

Qualifications & Requirements

· Prior technical backstage experience a must

· Deep understanding of theater design, lighting, and equipment

· A rich understanding of scenic construction, rigging, projections, sound, and lighting

· Excellent interpersonal skills

· Excellent planning and organizational skills

· Expert at Microsoft Office Suite

· Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously

· Integrity, with an ability to handle confidential information

· Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

· Bachelor’s degree in related field

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Technical Director to join our production team in a dynamic performing arts environment. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of productions, ensuring artistic vision is executed safely, efficiently, and at a high professional standard. The ideal candidate is a collaborative production leader who thrives in a fast-paced repertory setting and enjoys both building and executing live performances. The Technical Director is a full-time seasonal, salaried position with benefits, reporting to the Artistic Director. This position works closely with all members of the production team, as well as the Artistic Director, Choreographers, and Ballet Masters, to facilitate the technical needs of company rehearsals and performances.

Key Responsibilities

The Technical Director plays a key role in scenic builds, repairs, load-ins, show running, and load-outs, as well as managing the stage crew and ensuring safe and efficient execution of all productions. The role also supports the overall operations of the production department, including planning and coordination of production needs.

Physical Requirements

The Technical Director must be able to physically move and lift scenery and other objects weighing up to 70 lbs and work in a fast-paced production environment with changing technical demands.
