PERFORMANCE
Where are Carolina Ballet performances held?
When at our homebase of Raleigh, NC, we perform at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts at 2 E. South Street. Carolina Ballet also performs regularly in Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill and Wilmington.

When should I arrive?
It is a good idea to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of a performance to accommodate parking and ticket pickup or to enjoy a snack or drink before the show. If you should arrive late, you will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. In the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts there are monitors in the lobby airing the ballet in case you have to wait to be seated.

Where can I park?
Parking is available for $7.00 a car at various lots located close to the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. There is also a parking deck located at the northwest corner of the center.

Is there a dress code at your performances?
There is no dress code, and you will find people in anything from jeans to formal wear. Why not dress up and make it a night on the town? Most importantly just be comfortable and enjoy yourself. It is also useful to dress in layers in case you get cold or hot.

Are student prices available?
We currently have “Student Rush” tickets available at the theatre box office for $10 each. Rush tickets are not available until one hour before the performance begins. These are tickets for people who can provide valid college ID; seat location in the theatre is based on availability.

Are there lower prices for children?
We do not currently offer discounted ticket prices for children or senior citizens.

Do the dancers dance the same role each performance; if not, how can I find out which night a favorite dancer is performing?
Generally there are two different casts which alternate performances. Casting for each performance is not finalized until a few days before the program begins its run. Check our webpage for the program you wish to attend for casting updates around that time.

What’s all the clapping about?
While it is appropriate to clap when the first dancers appear on stage or when they finish a dance, many in a ballet audience also applaud when the dancers excecute difficult steps such as several turns in a row.

Why do the dancers not receive flowers?
Actually, the ballerinas in principal and soloist roles do receive flowers on Thursday and Friday nights. Because we often have two casts, that ensures that members of each cast receive flowers once. If you regularly attend a matinee or an evening other than Thursday and Friday, you have missed the “flower tradition”, but it does still exist.

What is Audio Description?
Audio Description involves the accessibility of the visual images of theater and other art forms for people who are blind or visually impaired. It is a narration service (provided at no additional charge to the patron) that attempts to describe what the sighted person takes for granted--those theatrical images that a person who is blind or has low vision formerly could only experience through the whispered asides from a sighted companion. In theaters, in museums, and accompanying film and video presentations, Audio Description is commentary and narration which guides the listener through the presentation with concise, objective descriptions of new scenes, settings, costumes, dance movements, body language, and "sight gags," all slipped in between portions of dialogue or songs. Found to be not only a significant technique for making the arts more accessible for an important but underserved constituency, Audio Description can be viewed as an aesthetic advance for the visual and performing arts.

Why don’t you have more live music?
Carolina Ballet often collaborates with the North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Master Chorale, Ciompi Quartet and other musicians throughout the season; however, we are unable to feature live musical accompaniment for every program. We hope, with your support, we will be able to in the future. Click here for ways to donate.

Why is it sometimes hot in the theatre?
The temperature must be warm enough to accommodate the dancers; they could easily pull a muscle if the temperature were too cold. Sometimes this affects the audience members. It is best to dress in layers for the theatre with a sweater or jacket that you can take on and off as your comfort level dictates.
