Principal Conductor

Alfred E. Sturgis has conducted a number of successful performances with Carolina Ballet including Messiah, Romeo & Juliet, Carmina Burana, and Nutcracker. He recently made his Lincoln Center debut as a guest conductor with the New York City Ballet. His international conducting experiences have taken him to China, Bulgaria, France, Italy, and the U.K.. Locally he has appeared as a Guest Conductor for the North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Theatre, Winston-Salem Symphony, Long Leaf Opera, and Capital Opera. Sturgis, who also serves as Music Director of the North Carolina Master Chorale, and the Tar River Orchestra was a 1996 recipient of the Raleigh Medal of Arts. In addition to his conducting experience, Sturgis was a featured soloist with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in Southern France, and still performs occasionally as a baritone or counter tenor..
